Huddersfield Town 0 Millwall 1 – Scott Malone goal earns South Londoners a vital win

Scott Malone’s third goal of the season earned Millwall a 1-0 victory at Huddersfield Town.

The Lions have been so effective on the road under the management of Gary Rowett and this was another impressive away day against opponents who had a strong record on their own patch. Only Watford had won more home matches this season than the Terriers.

Malone struck early – just four minutes were on the clock as he met a Danny McNamara cross on the run, dispatching the ball beyond Ryan Schofield.

It was an excellent finish by the Derby County loanee.

But Millwall needed some good fortune soon after when referee Peter Bankes decided that Ben Thompson’s shoulder-to-shoulder challenge on Lewis O’Brien was a penalty. Former Palace striker Fraizer Campbell whipped his effort on to the top of the bar.

Huddersfield had plenty of possession but found it hard to open up resolute and hard-working opposition. Shaun Hutchinson headed a Ryan Leonard corner wide in the 37th minute.

And Millwall continued to keep their energy levels high on a waterlogged pitch in the second period.

Leonard rightly saw his finish disallowed with Jake Cooper holding Schofield down after the keeper had only partially cleared with a punch from a corner.

Naby Sarr, making his 100th league start in English football, slide in and failed to find the target from a 72nd-minute corner.

It was to prove the last scare for the Lions as they moved nine points clear of the Championship bottom three.
