Fewer than 50 coronavirus patients are being treated at Croydon Hospital

By Tara O’Connor, local democracy reporter

There are now fewer than 50 coronavirus patients being treated at Croydon University Hospital.

But hospital boss Matthew Kershaw has warned against complacency.

Figures released by NHS England yesterday showed the hospital had recorded 11 more deaths – the highest in the country that day.

But the London Road hospital has explained that the date of reporting does not always reflect the date of death.

In this case, the 11 deaths were between January 4 and March 9.

The date of these deaths actually ranged from 4 January 2021 – 9 March 2021

Mr Kershaw, chief executive of Croydon Health Services, said: “We are now caring for less than 50 people in hospital with Coronavirus.

“This is a significant reduction in the number of positive patients within the hospital, but we cannot be complacent.

“People living in Croydon should continue to follow all national guidance and adhere to social distancing wherever possible, washing their hands frequently and wearing a face covering when required.”

At the peak of the pandemic the hospital was caring for 280 coronavirus patients and had to create more intensive care capacity.

Overall, more than 2,900 Covid-patients and recorded more than 580 coronavirus deaths.

For the seven days up to March 6 there was an infection rate of 38 cases per 100,000 in Croydon.

The rate peaked in January when – at its highest – it  was 1,205 per 100,000 people.
