“The easiest goal of my AFC Wimbledon career” – Ryan Longman happy to accept gift against Charlton Athletic

Ryan Longman admitted he has not had an easier finish in his AFC Wimbledon loan spell than his second goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Charlton.

The on-loan Brighton attacker pounced on a passback by Akin Famewo at Plough Lane. It came after goalkeeper Ben Amos opted for a short pass from his goal-kick.

Longman ended a 17-game wait for a goal as he clinically finished in the first period.

The 20-year-old is on eight goals for the campaign.

But his second at the weekend was a gift. Longman told AFC Wimbledon’s YouTube channel: “I don’t think I have [had an easier goal], especially not for Wimbledon. I’m happy to get the goals. It’s been a while since I last put it in the back of the net, to get two today was brilliant.

“In training we’ve been practising that scenario [pressing] all week – it’s come off today. I’ve been told to press the full-back, the centre-back and the keeper…they’ve made a mistake and I’ve punished them.

“I’m very happy I’m back on the scoresheet. Hopefully it will keep going in from here. The backroom staff have been brilliant. I’ve played a lot of minutes and the rest has done me some good. I’ve come back stronger.”

The Dons have lost just one of their last six matches but have drawn the other five. They are 23rd in the table with 10 matches remaining.

“The situation we’re in at the moment, it would have been good to get all three points,” said Longman. “The boys are half-upset it’s only a point.

“We’ve got to take the positives and the win will come soon. We’re playing well.

“The big target is to stay up. The next games we’ve got to pick up three points – get the wins in.”
