Crystal Palace Wetherspoons will not reopen when lockdown restrictions ease

By Tara O’Connor, local democracy reporter

A Wetherspoons in the Crystal Palace triangle will not reopen after the national lockdown.

A JD Wetherspoon spokesperson said all staff from The Postal Order in Westow Street have been offered jobs at other branches of the chain pub in the area.

The company has decided not to renew the lease, which had a break clause.

“We would like to thank our loyal staff and customers for their support over the years,” added a spokesperson.

In March last year the pub was vandalised with the words “Pay up” and “Pay your staff” in response to JD Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin suggested staff could find a job elsewhere when pubs were forced to shut in the first lockdown.

The Postal Order will become the second empty Wetherspoons pub in Crystal Palace.

The Grape and Grain, owned by the chain, has been empty since 2017.

A planning application to extend the building at the top of Anerley Hill was approved in May 2019.

It includes a building two storeys on top of the existing pub as well as a three-storey addition on the Church Road side of the building and roof garden.

Building work has not started on the site and JD Wetherspoon said all development projects are currently on hold.
