Horniman Museum appoints new head of horticulture

The Horniman Museum and Gardens has appointed a new head of horticulture who plans to create a micro-forest alongside the South Circular Road.

Errol Fernandes has joined the museum from Kenwood House in Hampstead, north London where he was a senior gardener.

He brings with him a keen interest in ecological and sustainable gardening and a creative approach to contemporary horticulture and design.

The new micro-forest will consist of 90 trees and hundreds of plants, which will act as a green screen, shielding the Horniman Gardens from traffic fumes and noise pollution.

Mr Fernandes said: “I’m excited to get to know the Horniman Gardens and put my skills and experience to good use.

“In particular I’m looking forward to furthering the links between the gardens and the museum collections, and championing sustainable and ecological gardening practices, as well as helping to make the Horniman Museum and Gardens even more accessible to the wider South London community.”

  • I have had a white fox come into my garden looking for food around my patio area. When it saw me looking at it, it scurried away via the old railway embankment onto the nature trail. There has been a family of foxes there for years but always red foxes. They often sunbathe in my garden in the summer. However, I have never seen a white fox before. Does Errol Fernandes have any knowledge of this? He was a splendid looking fox – at least I believe it was a fox!
