Mason Bennett gives his reaction after extending Millwall contract

Mason Bennett says he is “delighted” to have signed a new long-term contract at Millwall.

The 24-year-old has scored eight goals in 50 appearances for the Lions since initially signing on loan from Derby County in January 2020, a move which was turned into a permanent switch last summer.

“I’m delighted,” Bennett told the club’s official website. “I spoke to the gaffer towards the end of last season and it was something they wanted to do, they asked me if I was willing and 100 per cent because I’m committed to this club.

“I owe the gaffer so much, and all the coaching staff. They gave me the opportunity to come here and play my football and show what I can do. I want to return that.

“Last season I played so many games, I have never done that throughout my career, it’s by far the most I’ve played in my career. I’m delighted to have got minutes in the team, first and foremost, but to add goals to my game is always a dream. It’s been a good season, but I’m now looking forward to next season and hope to be even better.

“In the past I’ve been in teams, where the starting 11 chops and changes but the gaffer has stood by me, even when I haven’t played so well and that’s important as a young player to keep that consistency because that’s where you find rhythm and form.

“When I first signed on loan, I spoke to Gary [Rowett] and the plan was to play through the middle eventually. I’ve always wanted to be a striker. Wherever I play I’ll always try and score goals. Working with Jed [Wallace], who works tirelessly off the ball and he creates space for me. He does all the hard work and I tap it in.

“I’m really happy to be here and I appreciate the support from the fans who have been at home. We’ve been gutted we couldn’t have them with us this season, but next season we’ll have them back and I’m really looking forward to it.

“It will be brilliant to see the fans, there was a few games this season, where we really needed them. To have them back in the grounds will be great for us.”
