Greenwich announces new funding for events to help recognise Black History Month all year
Greenwich Council has announced new funding for events to help recognise black history throughout the year.
In support of the Black Lives Matter movement and Black History 365 (BH365), the council is providing up to £6,000 of funding per organisation to put on an event.
The funding will be available to help organisations mark Black History 365 with a range of events and activities in Royal Greenwich from October 1 this year, to September 30 2022.
Black History Month has been observed in Greenwich for many years, but BH365 hopes to recognise the achievements and contributions of people from the African and Caribbean diaspora have had in the community all year long.
Councillor Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We have an amazing, diverse and passionate community in our borough, and that diversity enriches our events, cultural activities and all our lives.
“This funding helps to bring culture and community together.”
The funding will be available to help put on events such as:
– music, dance and theatrical performances and workshops
– historical and factual events
– art installations, exhibits and craft workshops
– poetry and spoken word
Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities, said: “We believe it is not enough to celebrate black history on just one month of the year, so we created a new BH365 grant programme to support arts and community groups to bid for funding to put on activities and events throughout the year.
“Passionate about bringing your heritage and the community together? – funding is open now, please take a look, and bring on your culture.”
