Charlton Athletic boss Nigel Adkins expecting to be given green light to be in dugout at Reading

Nigel Adkins is expecting to be back in the Charlton dugout for Saturday’s pre-season friendly at Reading.

The Addicks manager has been self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19. Assistant boss Johnnie Jackson took charge for last weekend’s match at Dartford.

Next up for the South Londoners is a behind-closed-doors tune-up at the Madejski Stadium this weekend.

Asked how he was feeling, Adkins told the South London Press earlier today: “You have to respect it and recover as best as you can. I’m on the road to recovery. I’m pleased I’ve had both my jabs, put it that way.

“I anticipate being at the game on Saturday. We still have to go through the check off.”

Alex Gilbey had tweeted earlier in the week that he was laid low with the virus. He posted: “This covid is no joke. I have never been so ill in my whole life. Please stay safe people. It really isn’t nice.”

Asked for an update on the former MK midfielder was doing, Adkins replied: “It is private and confidential, I can’t really disclose that much. But he has obviously put out that he has been affected with it. It’s like everybody has been affected by it in different ways.

“I know it can be very draining.”
