Westminster student announces GCSE results live on the radio before he tells family
A student from Westminster announced his GCSE results on the radio to the whole of London before telling his family.
Westminster City School student Adebayo Agbayewa achieved Grade 9 and 8 in all subjects, plus one Grade 7.
Headteacher Peter Broughton and Year 11 students Akash Marsh and James Buckman, as well as Adebayo were interviewed live on BBC Radio London by Eddie Nestor, standing in for Vanessa Feltz.
The early start meant Adebayo announced his results on air before he had the chance to tell his family.
During the radio interview, Akash, who was awarded ten Grade 9s and one Grade 8, talked about how support from Westminster City School teachers during lockdown helped his studies.
James who received seven Grade 9s, Grade 8s and one Grade 7 admitted that he had been nervous about his GCSE results but was very happy with the outcome.
Westminster City School’s GCSE pass rate stands at 85 per cent across all qualifications.
In addition, 35 per cent of all Westminster City School GCSEs were graded at 9 to 7, or BTEC equivalent.
Mr Broughton, said: “Congratulations to Year 11 on such a brilliant set of results. I am delighted with this outcome, which reflects the hard work of our young people and our staff, and the support from parents/carers, over the last five years.
“While it has been a challenging time for all, our Year 11 cohort have shown determination and drive and it is their response to the pandemic, not the pandemic itself, that defines them. All should feel justifiably proud of the grades achieved.
“I would also like to thank all Westminster City School staff for their integrity and hard work in ensuring a fair process for awarding grades.”
Mr Potten, Head of Year 11, said: “Most of our Year 11 have been at Westminster City School since Year 7 and it has been wonderful to see them develop, grow and learn over the last five years. I’m so proud of the hard work and resilience they have demonstrated, particularly with the challenges caused by the pandemic.”
