Charlton Athletic boss gives his verdict on Grant Basey taking interim charge at Cray Wanderers

Johnnie Jackson has expressed his delight that Grant Basey has got a chance to manage at Cray Wanderers – with the Charlton Athletic academy coach recently taking on the role on an interim basis.

The 33-year-old has stepped in after the Isthmian League Premier Division side parted company with Danny Kedwell.

We reported earlier this week that Basey, an academy youth development phase coach at the Addicks, had asked permission from his employers before stepping in.

“Base is still one of our coaches and he’s doing his job with the academy,” said Jackson. “He’s really enjoying it and doing well. An opportunity came up at Cray, just over the holiday period, where they were looking for someone to take the team. He has got an affiliation with them, having played for them.

“It fits around his schedule as well while they are part time. He can make it work around his coaching commitments for Charlton. He has done really well, four points from two games. I know Base has got ambitions to manage as well, this is a great opportunity for him.

“He can step outside his normal role and have a taste of management in a senior environment as well.

“Whether it a long-term thing or not, I’m not too sure. That will be a question for Grant. But I’m pleased for him.”
