Former Crystal Palace defender could need Charlton exit to land more game time
Pape Souare could be cleared to leave Charlton Athletic in the January transfer window with the former Crystal Palace defender struggling for first-team action.
The Addicks signed Juan Castillo on loan from Chelsea at the end of last week. The Dutchman is a left-sided defender.
Charlton manager Johnnie Jackson started with Corey Blackett-Taylor in the left wing-back role in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town. He also has Ben Purrington and Souare who are natural defenders down that side.
Souare has not made the bench for the last three League One matches. He did start the 1-0 loss at Plymouth on December 18 but has not featured since.
The 31-year-old signed for Charlton in early December. He had been released by Troyes at the start of July.
“He has found his opportunities limited and I don’t think he has grabbed the opportunities when they have come his way,” said Jackson. “He’ll feel like he needs a run of games to get to that level but it is difficult – you have got to be ready to take the opportunity.
“He has found himself down the pecking order and we have brought another one in who plays in his position. It is going to be difficult to get game time.
“He has trained well, he trains hard, and hasn’t caused any problems.
“It’s something we both need to have a look at, to see if he is not entirely happy with the situation then how can we help him? That might be getting him some games somewhere else.”
