Former Crystal Palace midfielder picked out by Charlton Athletic pundit as he dissects 2-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday

Charlton Athletic pundit Steve Brown picked out Barry Bannan as the star performer for Sheffield Wednesday as they inflicted more League One misery on the South London club on Saturday.

It was Bannan’s early free-kick which was headed in by George Byers after just five minutes. Callum Paterson added a second on the stroke of half time.

And former Addicks defender Brown, on co-commentary duty at Hillsborough for Charlton TV, pinpointed the display of former Crystal Palace midfielder Bannan.

“He’s the one player who has controlled it and got on it,” he said. “He has looked very comfortable in possession. His footballing intelligence is far more than we’ve got in our set up.

“I know physically you can get on top of him, but you’ve got to get on top of him and we really haven’t got in his face enough. He’s been bright and intelligent in wide areas. He’s picked on people in wide areas. He’s had a very good performance.”

Charlton suffered a fifth straight league loss on the bounce.

“That early goal knocked us back,” said Brown. “It was quite an even first 45 minutes but that second goal just before half time really finishes us off. It was a very comfortable win in the end for Sheffield Wednesday.

“The job was done in the first 45 minutes and the second 45 was about keeping the ball away from us and trying to get a third but not extending themselves too much, so they didn’t get put under too much pressure defensively.

“It’s back to the drawing board for Johnnie Jackson and his team. There are players returning, which is a must. We need everybody available and everybody to start putting in 90-minute shifts.

“We seem to have a player every game who makes a mistake for a goal or doesn’t quite track a runner. We have got to cut out all those little mistakes to give ourselves an opportunity.

“We’re going behind to goals that are far to easy to give away. Until we sort that out, we’re always going to be on the back foot.”
