Johnnie Jackson pleased to sign off home campaign with win over Shrewsbury

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton ran out 2-0 winners over Shrewsbury during their final home game of the campaign – and boss Johnnie Jackson was pleased he could finish on a positive note at The Valley.

Second-half goals from Jayden Stockley, his 20th of the campaign, and Chuks Aneke were enough to seal victory in a contest that was marred by an accusation of racist abuse by a supporter from visiting goalkeeper Marko Marosi.

The Addicks are 12th in League One ahead of next weekend’s final-day trip to Ipswich, which will bring a disappointing campaign to an end.

Jackson said: “Really pleased that we got the win for the supporters. A performance to match, certainly in the second half. We were really good and played some good attacking football. Really took the game to them. It’s nice. It’s not been the ideal season but we’ve ended our home campaign with a good, solid performance and win and I think the supporters enjoyed it.

“The support that they gave us and the way they’ve applauded the boys off and the boys have applauded them back, it was a nice day.

“The supporters will always get behind you if you give them something to cling to. We’ve done that in recent weeks and we certainly did it today. If they see that then they will always get behind you.”

The South Londoners have won six of their last nine outings – with Jackson agreeing that the return of key players such as Stockley and Conor Washington have been vital.

“It’s not rocket science,” he added. “You get your best players back and playing together, you get your impact from the bench that you can try and shape the game that you want, and you get results.

“I kept talking about that when we got the guys back things would be different and you’re just hoping that they are when it does come along. Results have been really good. Six out of nine is a good return.”
