Women’s football: Charlton end winless run with comfortable victory at Blackburn

Charlton ended a six-match winless streak in style as three first-half goals saw them ease past Blackburn at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

The Addicks had not recorded a league victory since February 6 but strikes from Mia Ross, Emma Follis and Lois Heuchan put the result of the FA Women’s Championship match beyond doubt by the interval.

Ross opened the scoring in the 10th minute, turning home Katie Robinson’s cross to get her side off to the best possible start.

Millie Chandarana and Jade Richards both failed to trouble Natalia Negri as Rovers sought a response but their task became tougher just after the half-hour mark as Follis fired home from the edge of the area.

The lead was trebled in first-half stoppage time as Heuchan converted the rebound after Ross’ shot had been saved by Alex Brooks.

Blackburn made two changes at the break in an attempt to stem the tide but it remained largely one-way traffic, with Brooks called into action to keep out Kiera Skeels.

Hannah Godfrey cleared a Richards shot off the line and Saffron Jordan missed the target with a free-kick as Rovers continued to pay for a lack quality in the final third, while Brooks had to stay alert to keep out Ella Rutherford and Robinson at the other end.

There were few chances in the closing stages as the visitors comfortably completed a league double over a Rovers side who remain third from bottom.
