George Alexander dreaming scoring Wembley goal – just like his dad Gary did for Millwall in 2009
George Alexander is hoping to follow in his dad’s footsteps and score at Wembley Stadium when Bromley face Wrexham on Saturday in the FA Trophy final on Sunday afternoon.
The 21-year-old’s father Gary Alexander scored twice under the Wembley arch in Millwall’s 2009 play-off final defeat against Scunthorpe United.
The first is one of the best goals at the new national stadium after he hit looped a 35-yard half-volley over Joe Murphy in the Scunthorpe goal.
When asked about his dad’s goals, Alexander told the South London Press: “He doesn’t stop speaking about it still, so to do it myself would be unreal. It’s any boy’s dream to play at Wembley – you grow up watching all those players there – and it’s a good opportunity.
“Some people in their whole career don’t get to play at Wembley and I’m playing there in my first season in men’s football – I can’t really moan.
“I was eight [when he scored], I always tell him it’s an own goal but he’ll always say something about that. It was an unreal goal to be fair.”
Alexander was released by the Lions last summer. He has scored five goals in 28 appearances for Bromley.
The Bexley-born attacker added: “I’ve found it good, just played a lot of games. That’s what I wanted when playing men’s football and it’s different compared to the 23’s – getting roughed, kicked and that’s what it’s about.
“Points mean something in men’s football, in the 23’s if you lose it doesn’t really matter whereas here it’s peoples jobs at the end of the day.
“Any older pro are going to help you, there’s a lot of older pros that have helped me – that’s football really, they’ve been in and around the game a long time and I can learn off them every day.
“I’ve played as a striker and with two up front which is the position I enjoy the most. It’s been a really good learning curve for me.
“Danny [McNamara] is a few years older than me, if I see him I say hello to him, but I’m closer with Billy [Mitchell] – we have phone calls about each others’ games and we meet up and have some food. We’ll never lose that, we are friends and have been since we were young.”
