Athletics: Blackheath & Bromley third in latest NAL match
Blackheath & Bromley AC placed third against tough opposition in their National Athletics League match in Kingston last Saturday, writes Paul Halford.
The South London club are now fourth out of the 16 Premiership clubs.
At the third fixture next month, they look set to secure their place among the top eight clubs to contest the overall title in the A final in Bedford in August.
Four A-string wins and two B-string victories saw the club finish behind Thames Valley Harriers and Harrow AC following B&B’s win at the opening match in Manchester last month.
GB international Sam Reardon scored the win in a tactical A-string 800m in a time of 1:55.42. The 18-year-old, who won 4x400m relay gold with Britain at the European Junior Championships last year, also took second in the 400m in a personal best of 46.69. That time in his main event leaves him just 0.19 seconds outside the qualifying mark for the World Junior Championships this summer. He also ran the third leg of the 4x400m squad which finished second in 3:12.61.
Anchoring that team at the close of the meeting was Bailey Stickings, who won the first track event of the match, the 400m hurdles. His time of 51.24 was just 0.06 seconds outside his best.
Women’s team manager Niamh Bridson-Hubbard led by example in the 1,500m, fighting hard on the last lap to win in 4:33.47. She was also second in the 3,000m in 9:44.14.
The quartet of Modupe Shokunbi, Darcey Kuypers, Mallory Cluley, Cheriece Hylton combined to win the 4x100m in 47.55.
Zakia Mossi won the B-string 400m in 58.75, while Alex Hill prevailed in the B-string 400m hurdles in 62.92.
Although they are level on league points (14) with Harrow AC and Shaftesbury Barnet AC and behind Thames Valley Harriers (16), they currently lie fourth based on cumulative match points. Their next match in the league will be at Woodford on July 2.
