It’s good to talk, whatever your age
A new community centre has opened to encourage friendships between people of different generations – many of whom suffered from isolation during the pandemic.
Sparkle, based in St Stephen’s Church Hall in Manfred Road, Putney, was opened by the Mayor of Wandsworth earlier this month.
It will run weekly intergenerational sessions and older people are invited to take part in activities with children from Little Fingers Nursery, based at the church and Brandlehow Primary School, in Brandlehow Road.
These activities will include singing, reading, craft, gardening, digital and exercise and a free lunch will also be served.
Sparkle’s founder, Emma Chisholm, said: “I felt really strongly that after the pandemic, which of course made everyone even more isolated, it would be amazing to facilitate somewhere we could bring the generations together. “Intergenerational work really is a win-win.
“There are benefits for older people like reducing loneliness and improving cognitive functioning, mobility and well-being. And for younger people, improvements in communication skills, confidence and empathy.”
Sparkle will be open 10.30am – 2.30pm every Thursday.
