‘He showed potential’ – Plymouth Argyle reaction to Charlton signing Steven Sessegnon

Charlton Athletic have signed Fulham right-back Steven Sessegnon on a season-long loan and we’ve caught up with a Plymouth journalist to get some insight on the Addicks’ latest recruit.

Chris Errington – who has covered Argyle for 26 seasons at the Plymouth Herald – gives his verdict after the 22-year-old spent the second half of last season at Home Park.

HOW DID SESSEGNON DO ON LOAN AT PLYMOUTH?

Sessegnon was not fully fit when he joined Argyle on loan from Fulham in the hours before the January transfer window closed due to a hamstring injury. At the same time, Argyle went on an excellent run of results and their captain Joe Edwards was in great form at right wing-back so Sessegnon had to be content with a place on the substitutes’ bench. He did get his chance to play as the Pilgrims were hit by injuries in the closing weeks of the campaign, both in the right and left wing-back roles. Argyle struggled in their final few games but Sessegnon still showed his undoubted ability.

WOULD THE PLYMOUTH FANS HAVE LIKED HIM BACK?

I think a lot of fans would have welcomed him back because of the potential he showed when he did get his first team chance, but Joe Edwards has been a very consistent performer for Argyle over the last three years – Sessegnon would certainly not have been guaranteed to play week in week out.

DO YOU THINK HE WILL SUIT CHARLTON’S STYLE OF PLAY?

Difficult to say given that Ben Garner has only taken over as manager this summer but Sessegnon has a lot of technical ability and should be more than good enough to play for a top end League One club.

WHAT’S HIS MAIN POSITION AND CAN HE BE EFFECTIVE IN ANY OTHER POSITIONS?

I think right wing-back or an orthodox right-back role would suit him best, although the right side of midfield would probably be an option too given his attacking qualities down that side of the pitch.

WHAT ARE HIS BEST ATTRIBUTES? ANY WEAKNESSES?

Sessegnon only played 10 times for Argyle, and four of those appearances were as a substitute, so he did not have a lot of opportunities to show exactly what he was capable of. But even in that limited time his technical ability on the ball and attacking intent was obvious. It will be important for him at the age of 22 to start playing regular first team football because he does not have a lot of experience of that.
