Community joins together to celebrate school’s Ofsted success

A community joined together to celebrate a school’s success in a recent Government inspection.

On Friday, July 8, teachers, volunteers, charities, residents and primary school pupils came together for a tea party to celebrate the results of an Ofsted inspection at Goldfinch Primary School in Cunliffe Street, Streatham.

Goldfinch’s predecessor, Eardley School, was rated ‘inadequate’ and ‘requiring special measures’ in 2016.

But Goldfinch’s recent Ofsted review has leapt to ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding behaviour and attitudes’.

The report said: “Goldfinch is a school where pupils are extremely keen to learn and do well.

“Leaders have created a positive environment that ensures pupils are safe.

“Pupils enjoy learning and taking risks because they say that teachers give them “a chance to succeed”’.

“Relationships among staff and pupils are extremely positive. They show respect towards each other.

“Pupils concentrate with intensity in lessons and without disruptions. They take immense pride in their achievements.”

Head teacher, Emilie Haston said that the success was a result of “a true team effort in ensuring that we keep our children at the heart of everything we do”.

When she joined in September 2016 Mrs Haston started on a “quest for kindness” to turn the school around.

She said: “When you start with kindness you develop trust. When you develop trust you develop a sense of belonging. When you feel like you belong you can begin to learn and achieve.”

Councillor Judi Gasser, who attended the celebration, said: “It has been a pleasure to see how all the hard work of the team at Goldfinch Primary has paid off and to see the children thriving in this wonderful school.”

Goldfinch became part of the Dunraven Educational Trust in 2018.

Ofsted said: “The trust and governors have been instrumental and relentless in their pursuit of the school’s excellence plan”.

David Boyle, chief executive of the trust, said: “The trust has one overarching aim – excellence for and from everyone.

“We are delighted that the children of Goldfinch are now getting a great deal thanks to the dedication of Emilie Haston, her team and the governors.”
