Brixton market fire: storage area catches alight as 50 people evacuate
About 50 people had to evacuate Brixton market last night as a two-storey storage area caught fire sending plumes of smoke into the sky.
The London Fire Brigade said it was called at around 9pm to the blaze in Electric Lane near Brixton Market.
There have been no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A worker at the scene of the fire said traders from the market use the area to store their goods but had not seen how the fire started.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Fifteen fire engines and about 100 firefighters tackled a firei in Electric Lane near Brixton Market.
“The ground floor of a two-storey storage warehouse was destroyed by the fire and part of the first floor and roof were damaged. About 50 people left the building before the brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.
“The brigade’s 999 control officers took 53 calls to the blaze.
“The brigade was called at 11.58pm and the fire was under control by 12.30am. Fire crews from Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.”
