London Fire Brigade declares major event in the capital as it battles several large fires

The London Fire Brigade has declared a major event on the hottest day in the UK on record, as it battles several large fires across the capital.

The number of serious incidents has prompted the brigade to ask people to only call 999 if there is an emergency or if there’s an immediate risk to life and not to have barbecues or bonfires.

The brigade said firefighters are still meeting demand but declaring a major incident allows it to focus resources.

Assistant commissioner for operational resilience and control, Patrick Goulbourne, said: “The brigade remains ready to respond to incidents, however we want to ensure our resources are available for people who really need our help.

“If you see a fire smouldering, please don’t hesitate to call us. The sooner we know about a fire, the sooner we can bring it under control and prevent it from spreading further, reducing the need for us to mobilise additional resources.

“We are also strongly urging people not to have barbecues or bonfires today, as the ground is incredibly dry, which means even the smallest sparks could cause a fire.

“Please take care during the heatwave as all emergency services are facing unprecedented challenges.”

The brigade has been called out across South London, with two significant grass fires burning in Croydon, one in Oaks Road and the other in Chapel View, requiring around 60 firefighters.

Four fire engines were also tackling a fire in Sidcup Road, Eltham.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “The recent hot, dry weather has made the ground extremely dry, which unfortunately means grassland and parks will burn quickly when exposed to even the smallest of sparks.

“Common causes of grass fires include carelessly discarded cigarettes or matches as well as rubbish left lying around such as glass bottles, which can start flames by magnifying the sun’s rays.”
