100 per cent affordable development to be delivered in Southwark

An agreement has been completed that will see a 100 per cent affordable development completed in Southwark.

Southern Housing Group has agreed a deal to provide 109 new affordable homes and 1,351 sq metres of flexible commercial space in Parkhouse Street, Walworth.

The work is set to begin at the end of this year.

The housing association claims the new homes will also see future residents benefit from a 38 per cent reduction in energy bills because of the development’s approach to “energy efficiency and environmental innovation”.

This includes an 82 per cent carbon reduction, which it says reinforces the borough’s roadmap towards carbon neutrality.

The development contributes to urban greening in the borough, with an extensive “green corridor” of newly-planted trees that will connect the new homes to nearby Burgess Park.

The project will be air quality neutral, providing a car-free environment with 223 cycle spaces to encourage sustainable and active transport.

James Price, head of acquisitions and partnerships at Southern Housing Group, said: “We are delighted to be delivering 109 new affordable homes in Southwark where the Group already owns and manages more than 1,500.

“What excited us about this scheme was its excellent location next to Burgess Park and its innovative energy strategy, which we believe will form the blueprint for many of our future developments.”

Joseph Homes will continue to operate 1,351 sq metres of modern and flexible commercial space for businesses.

Paul Dipino, chief innovation officer of Joseph Homes, said: “We’re delighted that the residential aspects of our Parkhouse Street development will be taken forward by Southern Housing Group and we’re really proud of the difference these homes will make to the community.”
