Fake Shell adverts pop up across South London blaming them for climate breakdown

Climate activists have swapped adverts at a bus station with fake adverts blaming oil giants Shell for climate breakdown.

The satirical adverts, claiming to be from the energy giant Shell, have been spotted in bus stops across the city, taking aim at the company’s role in driving climate change.

The fake adverts appeared at bus stops in Amersham Road, New Cross, and East Dulwich Road.

The slogans read “Shell: burning your future” and “Climate breakdown: we cause it”, alongside images of floods and wildfires.

Fossil Free London, a grassroots climate action group which campaigns against oil and gas companies in the capital, shared the images on its social media accounts.

The action group tweeted: “Spotted! And spot on. Shell have raked in truly astronomical profits – £10 billion in the last three months.

“Meanwhile our energy bills go through the roof and the climate crisis cooks western Europe under an unprecedented heatwave.

“Again and again, Shell has shown it’s willing to trash the environment, violate human rights and drive us to the precipice of climate breakdown in order to line its shareholders’ bulging pockets.

“There’s only one response to a company this dangerous: shut it down. #ShellMustFall.”

Yesterday, Shell announced it made a record-breaking £10bn in profits in the last financial quarter between April and June.

The controversial oil giant’s revenue has surged off the back of the war in Ukraine and cost of living crisis.

A Shell spokesman said: “We respect the right of everyone to express their point of view. As a company, Shell has clear target to become a net-zero emissions business by 2050.

“We are also deeply committed to the UK and are planning to invest between £20-25 billion in the UK energy system over the next decade – more than 75 per cent of this will be in low- and zero-carbon products and services, including offshore wind, hydrogen and electric mobility.”
