Travelodge hotel to bulldoze award-winning Streatham music venue

A much-loved music venue could be lost forever after Travelodge submitted plans to bulldoze it.

The budget hotel chain wants to build a seven-storey hotel on the site of the former award-winning Hideaway club in Streatham.

The music venue and comedy club, which has welcomed artists such as Susan Cadogan and Ray Gelato, closed in 2020 due to the pandemic.

It announced it would not be reopening at the site the following year due to the poor condition of the building.

Now Travelodge wants to redevelop the former venue to create a 117-bedroom hotel, with space for a “cultural unit” on the ground floor.

But some residents fear the planned 357sqm space will be too small for a replacement venue to attract enough customers to survive.

Planning documents read: “The proposed building has been designed as part ground plus five-storey and part ground plus six-storey. The overall height of the building is approximately 25m.

“The proposed hotel element comprises 117 bedrooms across six floors. This consists of 12 accessible hotel rooms, 52 double rooms and 53 family rooms.”

Travelodge has been contacted for comment.
