BREAKING: Serious incident declared in Greenwich as armed police officers shoot man
The Metropolitan Police have declared a ‘serious incident’ in Greenwich this afternoon after a man was shot by armed police.
The Met confirmed the shooting in a statement saying “at 2.31pm on Friday, August 5 police received multiple 999 reports of a man with a firearm in Creek Road, SE8.
“Firearms officers attended the scene. The man was located. A police firearm was discharged and the man sustained a gunshot injury.”
The roads have been cordoned off around Creek Road in Deptford.
One witness, Gemma Daly, 31, a technology consultant who lives in a flat above Creek Road, said she was making food when she heard a loud bang.
She said: “I heard some shouting then heard a huge bang. About a minute later [I heard] police sirens so went to the window and saw four police cars followed by ambulance and then armed police arrived about five minutes later.
“They searched the car on the bridge. The man on the side of the bridge was being treated on the floor by police. [His] clothing was removed and there was a wound on his front and back. [The] ambulance took over and stretchered him off.
“The car is still there abandoned on the bridge. My assumption is it is the person who was shot.
Ms Daly said the road was still blocked off at around 4.30pm and that more police were arriving on the scene.
“I don’t think we can leave the building yet,’ Ms Daly Added. “The cordon is right outside and there’s still about 25 officers down there. The forensics team have arrived.”
The Met also said in its statement: “London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance also attended. He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. We await an update on his condition.
“No other injuries have been reported. Significant cordons are in place. We ask members of the public to avoid the area.
“The investigation is in its early stages. At present there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the wider public.
“The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 2.42pm today (August 5) to reports of a shooting in Creek Road, Greenwich.
“We sent a number of resources including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a motorcycle paramedic, a medic in a fast response car and an incident response officer, and we also dispatched medics from London’s Air Ambulance.
“We treated a man at the scene and took him as a priority to a major trauma centre.”
