Only two shots on target despite 63% possession at Wycombe – how does Ben Garner think Charlton can improve in the final third?
Time on the training ground – that is what Ben Garner reckons will improve Charlton’s return in the final third in this early stage of the season.
The Addicks played out a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon – but were only able to muster two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes despite enjoying 63 per cent possession.
They only had one goal to show for similar dominance of the ball during the draw with Cambridge last weekend. The South Londoners did grab a five-goal haul against 10-man Plymouth three games ago but haven’t looked as fluent since.
“Time on the training ground,” said Garner, when asked what his side need to do in order to turn possession into chances.
“There’s no shortcut, unless there’s £20million to spend this week and we can go out and get a couple of players to make a real difference. It’s work on the training ground, it’s nothing other than time and hard work.
“We created enough positions to win the game but it was just the final third where we needed to be a little bit better. It’s an ongoing process, we’re still very early days here. We’re working it through the thirds well and we’re getting there regularly. We just need to make better decisions in the final third and we’ll score more goals.”
Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi bagged the second goal of his spell with the Addicks shortly after Anis Mehmeti gave the home side a first-half lead. The 19-year-old was the only man who looked like he could make something happen for the visitors in the second period.
Garner added: “A wonderful goal and several moments second-half where he does unbelievably well. He did well to come off the pitch with his shirt still on as it was being grabbed constantly when he went past people.
“Sometimes they’re not fouls that stop him but they slow him. It makes a difference but he has wonderful talent and he’s only going to get better and better for us.”
