‘Teams are punishing us’ – Millwall assistant boss Adam Barrett reacts to 2-1 loss at Blackburn Rovers
Millwall assistant boss Adam Barrett has stressed that his players need to stop making errors after ‘gifting’ Blackburn Rovers their opener in the 2-1 defeat at Ewood Park.
Tyrhys Dolan scored the opener for the hosts before Ben Brereton Diaz scored Rovers’ second.
Jake Cooper did pull one back for the South London club in the 75th minute, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions’ winless away run continues.
Barrett spoke to the media post-match after Millwall boss Gary Rowett had to head back to London for the London Marathon, which he is running tomorrow.
Barrett said: “We had the better of the chances in the first half but didn’t quite take them. The really hard thing to take is it is another error away from home which has gifted them the goal.
“That is what it was, a gift, and that’s something we’ve got to cut out because there’s been too many away from home.
“Then you’re on an uphill task – it makes life difficult, but we got ourselves back in the game with Jake’s [Cooper] goal. We had good opportunities at the end to nick a draw.
“But we have to stop coming from one or two goals behind. Ideally, it’s 0-0, and you’re making the changes with the impacts to win the game.
“It’s been too often away from home this year, and we pride ourselves on our defensive record, which has been very good over the past few years.
“We looked solid first half, but we have to cut these errors out because we’ve gifted them a goal.
“It’s a very difficult league. We’ve got to make sure we have a reaction on Wednesday, and we’re expecting a reaction out of the boys, but it’s that little moment of concentration.
“You just can’t lapse for one moment, or you’ll get punished. Unfortunately, at the moment, any little lapse that we are having, teams are punishing us.”
