‘Frustrated’ – Patrick Vieira reacts to late Conor Gallagher winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira was once again frustrated by his side conceding late on after Conor Gallagher scored a 90th-minute winner in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.
The Eagle opened the scoring after seven minutes at Selhurst Park through Odsonne Edouard.
The French forward spread the ball out wide to Jordan Ayew on the right-hand side, and the Ghanian whipped a tantalising cross for Edouard to squeeze past Wesley Fofana and plant the ball into the top left-hand corner.
Graham Potter’s side equalised through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 38th minute.
Thiago Silva, who could have been sent off for deliberately denying Jordan Ayew a chance to break through on goal with his hand minutes before, leapt over Nathaniel Clyne and headed the ball into the path of Aubameyang.
The former Arsenal forward shot on the turn and drilled the ball past Vicente Guaita.
Former Eagles loanee Conor Gallagher, who came on as a substitute at Selhurst Park, scored a 90th-minute strike from distance to deny the Eagles a point.
“It was a difficult game for us. But we did enough to get a point,” said Vieira.
“Conceding that goal at the end frustrated the team and myself.”
Gallagher was applauded off the pitch by a handful of the Palace fans after scoring the winner.
“He deserved it,” said Vieira.
“It shows the type of fans we have at our football club. He had a really good season when he was with us last year, and this is the way the fans show their appreciation.
“It was a good goal, but we shouldn’t have allowed him to take that chance. We had enough people around him and the ball to stop him from taking that chance.”
The Eagles were without Joachim Andersen. The Danish centre-back had started every game in the Premier League under Vieira this season.
“He trained with us yesterday morning, and he felt something on his calf, that’s why he wasn’t involved today,” added Vieira.
