We Are Lewisham’s celebrates London Borough of Culture 2022

We Are Lewisham’s ‘LIT!’ event will see the district light up in a final celebration of its tenure in the cultural spotlight as the winner of the London Borough of Culture 2022.

On December 21, the shortest day of the year, Beckenham Place Park will be transformed with an illuminated trail, a contemporary circus show by the Revel Puck Circus, and a winter fair.

The London Borough of Culture Award was launched in June 2017 shines a light on the character and diversity of London’s boroughs.

This year it celebrated We Are Lewisham’s programme of events which highlighted the power of culture to spark political change and was inspired by Lewisham’s history of activism and its fight for equality.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham said: “Our year as the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture has been a fantastic year celebrating Lewisham’s diversity and bringing us together as a community.

“Lewisham is such a special place and the programme has really shone a light on local talents and places and the finale will be no different, a real spectacle of light, music, live acts, creativity and talent. I invite everyone to come along and experience what Lewisham has to offer.”

There will be a flash mob of ring bearers who have taken part in this year’s events, choreographed by Natasha Khamjani. Audiences are invited to watch this before enjoying the other event.

The illuminated trail will be a free, unticketed event from December 20-22, showcasing the beauty of the park at night, with plenty of food and drink options on offer.

The Revel Puck Circus’s The Wing Scuffle Spectacular will feature acrobatics, parkour and contemporary dance from December 15 to January 7.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London said: “I’m delighted that the year will conclude in spectacular style with LIT! bringing communities together at Beckenham Place Park and I hope the legacy of the London Borough of Culture will inspire the local community for years to come.”
