Karl Robinson: Ricky Holmes didn’t deserve rough reception from Charlton Athletic fans

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Karl Robinson did not feel his reception on his Charlton Athletic return was a bad one – but also insisted Ricky Holmes did not deserve to be jeered by home supporters.

Both men were making their first returns since leaving the Addicks.

Holmes was sold to Sheffield United in January and was loaned to Oxford United in August.

Robinson stepped down as Charlton manager early in 2018 to take on the job at the Kassam Stadium.

Asked about the reaction he got from the home support after tonight’s 1-1 draw, Robinson replied: “I thought I got a good one.

“The fans on the right-hand side [West Stand] clapped, which was something I appreciated. I was surprised at what Ricky Holmes got – he was told he had to go.

“So why blame Ricky Holmes? Why did you blame Ricky Holmes? The club got offered money, took it and got a better contract going to the Championship. Obviously you are going to go for it. At no stage was he told he wasn’t for sale.”
