Millwall’s Shaun Williams on being designated penalty-taker and why win over Wigan can be a turning point for Lions

BY JAKE SANDERS

Shaun Williams hopes Millwall’s victory against Wigan Athletic will proved to be a turning point in their season.

The Lions stand-in captain netted his fourth goal of the season to restore parity on Tuesday before Steve Morison came off the bench to bag his first of the campaign and complete the turnaround.

And the three points were crucial as it saw Millwall climb out of the relegation zone ahead of another massive game against Ipswich Town at The Den tomorrow.

“I think it was thoroughly deserved,” Williams said “We were unlucky at the weekend and have come away with three points on Tuesday, which I believe we definitely deserved.

“We take each game as it comes, and we just look to build on this performance.”

The Latics took the lead through Jed Wallace’s own goal just before the half-time and were handed a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 as Mahlon Romeo clashed with James Vaughan in the box.

Josh Windass skied the resulting penalty and Williams felt justice was done.

He said: “I don’t think the first one was a penalty – from the view I had anyway. Luckily the guy missed and we were awarded one down the other end and we scored. It’s a tale of two penalties really.”

Less than a minute after Wigan missed from the spot, Williams showed the former Rangers striker how it was done, scoring high into the top corner from 12 yards.

It was the second spot-kick the Republic of Ireland international has converted this season – after netting in the EFL Cup victory against Plymouth Argyle in August. The midfielder is now the club’s allocated penalty taker.

Williams continued: “It’s been set in stone from the start of the season, that’s it now.

“I don’t really look at my own performances. It’s more of a team game, and if I can help the team in any way I can, that is first and foremost, and I will take the personal accolades afterwards.

“We have been unlucky, but you have got to make your own luck at the same time. Maybe last season those chances were not going in against us and it’s just unfortunate that they are this season.

“Hopefully it is a turning point and we can push on now.”
