Boroughs with most Strep A infections revealed

By Joe Coughlin, Local Democracy Reporter

Two London boroughs are suspected of having the most Strep A infections in the capital, according to new data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

A report from the UKHSA said that Bromley and Bexley were the two boroughs with the highest suspected number of Strep A infections, as of December 4.

A report showed that 13 people in Bromley were likely infected with scarlet fever, with Bexley just behind with 12 infections. The overall total in London was 156, according to the report.

London is the region with the third highest number of suspected scarlet fever infections in the UK.

The report said that South East and North West regions had the most number of cases as of December 4, at 189 and 182 infections respectively.

Speaking about Strep A infections, Dr Nada Lemic, Director of Public Health in Bromley, said: “Major complications with Strep A are still relatively rare, but please do keep a close eye on your child if they are unwell and don’t hesitate to seek help and advice if you are concerned in any way.

“As a parent, if you feel that your child seems seriously unwell, you should trust your own judgement and contact 111, your GP or call 999 in an immediate emergency.”
