Crystal Palace midfielder looks set for FA Cup start against Southampton

Patrick Vieira says Will Hughes deserves a chance to start Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Southampton.

Hughes – signed from Watford last summer in a ÂŁ6million deal – has yet to start a game in the Premier League this season.

The 27-year-old has played 33 times for the Eagles, recording one goal and one assist during his time at Selhurst Park.

“When I look at the last couple of weeks that he had in training, he deserves to have a chance,” Vieira said of Hughes. 

“Tomorrow, he will be one of the players that can start the game.

The Crystal Palace left-back is still suspended – although it is the final match of his three-game ban – after his red card in the 3-0 defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day.

Palace reached the semi-final stage of the FA Cup last season, losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Wembley.

“We will have the same group available as in the last game against Tottenham,” confirmed the Palace boss.

“We have a good group of players who want to do well in any competition and last year was a really good run for the club. The players and fans all enjoyed the journey. 

“It will be tough against a Premier League opponent, but we will try to enjoy the cup.”
