Man who killed pedestrian speeding in overcrowded car in central London jailed for two years

A driver who killed a pedestrian while speeding to avoid having to stop at a red traffic light has been jailed.

Ibnu Rizwan, 28, of Brightwell Crescent, Wandsworth, had been on a night out with friends and was driving a hire car when he hit a 32 year old man on the Minories near Tower Bridge, on August 8, 2021.

Rizwan pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on Friday to causing death by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment and disqualified from driving for four years at the same court on Monday.

After midnight on August 8, 2021, Rizwan drove himself and five others from Clapham Common to Shoreditch in a hired Volkswagen Polo, which seats a maximum of five, to visit a nightclub in the area.

The sixth person in the vehicle sat on the lap of another passenger.

At 12.51am, Rizwan sped up the car in an attempt to drive through an amber traffic light on the Minories before it turned red.

The car was travelling at more than 30 miles per hour, above the 20 miles per hour speed limit, when Rizwan hit the victim as he crossed the road.

The victim was taken to hospital following the collision, where he sadly died four days later.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Bishop, from the City of London Police’s Major Crime Team, said: “Rizwan drove over the 20 miles per hour speed limit to try and avoid having to stop at a red light with horrific consequences. He had no consideration for his surroundings, pedestrians and other drivers.

“This case demonstrates the devastating effects that not adhering to speed limits can have, and shows the importance of driving responsibly.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
