Palace boss highlights important aspect from Manchester United draw

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira says it was not a relief that his side secured a last-minute point against Manchester United in their 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles manager also believed that the resilience his side showed to stay in the game will be important for the rest of the season.

United opened the scoring through Bruno Fernandes in the 44th minute. Christian Eriksen found his way into the Palace penalty area and found Fernandes just inside the box.

The Portuguese midfielder steadied himself and rifled a shot beyond Vicente Guaita to give Erik ten Hag’s side the lead.

David de Gea produced two important saves – keeping Odsonne Edouard out from distance in the first half and denying Marc Guhei from a corner in the second half – to keep United’s lead intact.

But a late Michael Olise free-kick from distance flew past the Spanish keeper in the 91st minute and secured a point for the Eagles.

It was important not to lose the game. Against a team who are playing well, it was important for us to stay in the game as long as we could.

“We managed to take a point – it was a fully-deserved point.

“It was not a relief. The performances have been quite good – we have been unlucky not to get more points.

“The results say something different. But we have been positive with the players about the way we want to play the game.

“When you don’t win games, there are parts you want to improve. When you go through a difficult period, you have to keep working well and hard.

“It was important not to lose today, but on the other side, we showed some resilience and that will be important for the rest of the season.”
