Millwall boss says it wouldn’t have been ‘fair’ to block defender’s January exit

Gary Rowett is hoping that Hayden Muller can kick on following his Millwall exit.

The 20-year-old Croydon centre-back joined Irish side Dundalk on a permanent basis in this transfer window.

Muller made four senior appearances for the Lions. He appeared in one matchday squad for the Lions this season, the 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United in August when he was an unused substitute.

“We went to St Johnstone on loan and didn’t necessarily impact how he would’ve liked,” Rowett told the South London Press.

“You get to a point with a player where, is he going to play for us at this moment in time? Probably not. Has he got a chance to go and start his career again.

“He’s in a slightly different scenario – but still a bit of a similar one – to Isaac [Olaofe]. Once we feel they are not going to impact our first-team then it is unfair to stand in their way. Hayden was one of those who we felt it was a good opportunity for him to get started again.

“We didn’t feel it was the right thing to stand in his way.”
