Man killed after being crushed by pop-up urinal

A man has been killed after he was crushed by a pop-up toilet in central London.

Firefighters were called to a person trapped under the ‘telescopic urinal’  in Charing Cross Road, who was believed to be working on public urinals when the accident happened.

Telescopic urinals are stored underground during the day before being brought up to street level in the evening to reduce public urination elsewhere.

The Met confirmed the man had been killed. An updated statement said: “We’re sorry to have to update that, despite the efforts of emergency services, the man who was critically injured in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed. Cordons remain in place at the location.”

He was trapped below street level underneath the hydraulic urinal. Firefighters worked with emergency services and used a winch to free him.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “The brigade was called at 1.05pm and the incident was over by 3.41pm.

“Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Dowgate fire stations were at the scene.”

A statement from the Met said: “Police were called at around 1.10pm to a seriously injured man at Cambridge Circus.

“The man is thought to have sustained crush injuries while working on a ‘telescopic urinal’ at the location. Emergency services remain at the scene.”
