Crystal Palace keeper full of praise for his defence – and Eagles fans – after Old Trafford clean sheet

Wayne Hennessey was full of praise for his defence after Crystal Palace came away from Old Trafford with a point and a clean sheet.

The Welshman was crucial to earning the goalless draw with Manchester United, with some excellent saves – including one late on from Romelu Lukaku – but focused on those in front of him for credit.

“The whole back four were fantastic,” he told Crystal Palace TV.

“They put their bodies on the line and that’s what we needed. Credit to them.”

The goalkeeper was forced to deal with United putting balls into the box and aiming for Lukaku, but commanded his area well and claiming several crosses.

“That’s their key thing getting to wide and putting in the box. Lukaku is so good in the air.”

Marouane Fellaini was a second half substitute but his presence failed to cause any real issues as Hennessey was able to keep a clean sheet.

“Bringing Fellaini on gave them a different aspect. It was very much route one football but it makes it difficult. I thought we coped with it very well.

“I just want as many clean sheets as possible. Hopefully I can keep getting them and we start to take our own chances and win games.”

Hennessey’s name was sung frequently by the Palace fans as he made several key saves and plucked crosses out of the air, and he was full of appreciation for the reception he received.

“The fans were superb from the get go for the whole game. It’s a delight to have fans like that. Hopefully we can start winning at Selhurst and get the fans on our side. We can’t thank them enough.”
