Charlton Athletic boss explains why he won’t divulge identity of young trio offered new deals

Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden has explained why he will not reveal which three young players have been offered new deals.

Addicks technical director Andy Scott told the club’s in-house media that they had rejected approaches for some of their top prospects.

And Scott added that contract extension offers had been made to three of their young players.

Asked if he could expand on which players were mulling over offers, Holden told the South London Press: “No. I get the question. The reasoning behind that is when you look at the players we brought in during the window, we’ve not been shouting it from the rooftops and rumour-mongering. We get our work done and we do it quietly and diligently.

“It’s the same with these contract offers. We’ll speak directly to the player and their families on that. We don’t need to be alerting anyone else outside of Charlton Athletic as to who we are talking to – and why or when.

“Another reason is that you never quite know how long these negotiations are going to go on for. You’d like to think they’d be done pretty quickly but we’re talking about high-quality young players who have had interest in them before.

“There are always reasons why they may or may not take the offer. So we’ll work quietly in the background. The main focus for them is that they are concentrating on what is in front of them – the next training session and game, allowing the contract situation to be in the background. Once we get an agreement from both parties then it will be announced.”
