Dean Holden says he’ll take the hit for Jack Payne’s “harsh” red card against Burton Albion

Dean Holden felt Jack Payne’s dismissal during today’s win over Burton Albion was “harsh”.

The Addicks winger was introduced as a second-half substitute but returned to the changing room early after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

The first was for a foul on former Charlton man Deji Oshilaja, before he given his second booking for a mistimed lunge on Bobby Kwama.

Holden said: “It’s not a red card in my opinion. Some of the fouls you see now, it’s not a red card. We’ve seen Jes [Rak-Sakyi] cut in two against Sheff Wednesday, seen him stamped on at Peterborough. Miles [Leaburn] got smashed in two at Bristol Rovers which is why he missed today.

“[Payne’s] first tackle was a good one. A strong one, but a fair one. The second one, he’s stretching. Does he really need to show him a red card? I don’t think he does. We’ll take it, it’s a one-game ban. There’s nothing we can do about it now.

“I want the players to be committed and put tackles in. When I came in that’s one side of the game, for as good as we were as a possession-based team, we weren’t showing enough of that. I’ll take the hit for that. I’m asking the players to go and put themselves about. He mistimed a tackle and ended up with a red card that I thought was harsh.”
