Not long before Millwall players report back as Spanish training camp part of prep for Championship campaign

Millwall’s players report back for pre-season training on June 28.

The Championship campaign starts on the weekend of August 4-6 and the fixtures are released next week.

Millwall players away on international duty are set to get a slightly later return date. New signing Kevin Nisbet is with Scotland while Tom Bradshaw (Wales) and George Saville (Northern Ireland) are also facing more match action this month.

“The first day will be based on testing and usually on the second day we finish off the testing and get out, do a bit of ball work,” Lions boss Gary Rowett told the South London Press.

“Most players now, in fairness, they don’t mess about – they do the work over summer and come back pretty fit.

“They are usually raring to go. When I was a player they would come back a stone overweight and pre-season was almost about getting back to normal.

“But now players very rarely lose that condition. They are a lot more professional.”

Millwall will also have a training camp in Alicante, Spain.

“We’re there for about six days,” said Rowett. “It’s another vital part of what we’re doing. It will be a good trip – the facilities look good. We’ve stayed pretty domestic since I’ve been here, simply because of Covid really and the difficulty and uncertainty of travelling, different reasons really.

“This was one where we felt it would be good to get away to a different environment and we’re looking forward to it.”
