Man in Ford Transit van ‘tried to abduct child’ on way to school
A man reportedly tried to abduct a child on the way to school yesterday morning before a parent managed to intervene.
A parent reported a man in a silver Ford Transit van attempted to entice a child into the back of their van at around 9am in Purneys Road, Greenwich.
The incident has seen teachers asked kids “to be vigilant” on the school run.
Schools in Greenwich have sent letters to parents informing them of the kidnapping attempt.
A letter from St Thomas More Catholic Primary School on Appleton Road in Eltham said: “We are writing to inform you that there has been an incident in the local area today.
A parent/carer from our school reported there was an attempt to abduct their child this morning.
“They reported a man in a silver Transit van attempted to entice the child into the back of their van.
Fortunately they were able to intervene.
“The police have been informed and are working with the school and family. We will be sharing this video about strangers and safe adults with all children.
“It would be an ideal opportunity to also talk about it with your children at home to reinforce this important message – you could discuss safe places near you, as mentioned in the video, and also watch it together.”
Middle Park Primary School, in Middle Park Avenue, also sent a letter to parents informing them of the incident.
It also described the attempted kidnapping but assured parents that police had been informed. “Please be vigilant,” it added.
Police confirmed they were called just after 9am today after a man in a van reportedly spoke to a child who was on route to school in Purneys Road.
A spokesman for the Met said: “Police were called at around 9.20am on Thursday, June 15, after concerns were raised about an incident where a man in a van reportedly spoke to a child who was on route to school in Purneys Road, SE9.
“An adult who was looking after the child reported the incident to school who subsequently contacted police. The child is safe and well.
“Enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances of the incident.”
