‘Good news’ – Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson provides Nathan Ferguson injury update

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has provided an injury update on Nathan Ferguson as the ex-West Brom defender steps up his return from a hamstring injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

Ferguson has been plagued by injuries during his time at Selhurst Park and has only played eight minutes of senior football for the Eagles since signing from the Baggies in July 2020.

He came on as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat away at Tottenham Hotspur in the 2021-22 campaign.

The 22-year-old was handed a one-year contract extension at the end of last season.

Ferguson has been recovering at the club’s academy at the start of the season.

“We got some news today on that,” said Hodgson.

“We got the good news that he was actually doing some training now. He’s back actually taking part in training sessions, and they’re hoping to get him back on the field of play and playing again reasonably soon.“It’s taken a long time. With all the setbacks and problems, they have had to be extra cautious.

“The good news is that he’s training over there like we hope he would.

“It’s done the trick as he’s got himself into a position where they [the academy] think he could play soon.

“I would be delighted for him, that’s the most important thing.

“A part from the fact he’s a good player and he could be a big help to the team going forward.

“If we take that out of the equation, I’m just very happy for him that he must be seeing some sort of light at the end of the tunnel of what has been an incredibly dark tunnel.

“His negotiation of that tunnel has been incredible. To suffer so many setbacks and so many disappointments at his age, I don’t know that many people would quite frankly come through that.

“He must be a strong and resilient lad. I like him very much as a person. No one would be happier than any of us out there [on the training pitch] than to see Nathan Ferguson back with the first team and 100 per cent fit.

“We would welcome him with open arms, but we have to be cautious. It will be a process that will take a bit longer than next week or the week after.”
