Women in Revolt!… Radical, rebellious and punk opens at the Tate Britain

Radical, rebellious and punk – this is an exhibition on women’s art and activism in the UK at the end of the 20th century.

Women in Revolt! will open at the Tate Britain in Millbank, Pimlico in November, and it’s the first of its kind – a major survey of UK feminist art by more than 100 artists.

Through their creative practices, women’s liberation was forged against the backdrop of extreme social, economic and political change.

A variety of mediums are covered in this exhibition including painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, film and photography.

The timeline flows across the British women’s liberation movement, the fight for legal changes impacting women, maternal and domestic experiences, punk and independent music, Greenham Common and the peace movement, the visibility of black and South Asian women artists, Section 28 and AIDS.

The diverse group of women showing work have frequently worked outside mainstream art institutions and left out of artistic narratives.

Women in Revolt! will present many of these works for the first time since the 1970s.

Head to Tate Britain between November 8 and April 7 to catch Women in Revolt!
