Brixton Bulls win award at London Rugby League Foundation Awards

Brixton Bulls have been awarded 2023 Club of the Year Award at the London Rugby League Foundation Awards, writes Richard James.

This award reflects the further growth of the Bulls and they are now one of the only clubs in the South-East to have players across nearly all age groups from U7s to over-35s.

The club enjoyed success on the field with the men’s team finishing top of the London Premier League while the U14s reached the Plate final in the London Junior League.

Last year also saw the successful launch of the masters over-35 team. This format provides a great opportunity for older players of all shapes and sizes to play rugby, in a hybrid game of contact and non-contact.

The clubs U13 and U11 teams both went on tour to Keighley in Yorkshire while five of their U14 players were selected for the combined South London side that triumphed against north London in last year’s Origin series. A dozen of the U14s side also took part in a development day hosted by the London Broncos.

The Junior Bulls were mascots for the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium and also for the London Broncos at the Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon.

This followed on from last Autumn, when the Junior Bulls were flag bearers at the Emirates Stadium for the World Cup semi-final and did the same at the Copper Box for the Wheelchair World Cup.

The juniors also received a special training session from England Stars including wheelchair and women’s captains Tom Halliwell and Jodie Cunningham, plus rugby league legend Martin Offiah.

Bulls’ primary and junior officer Rick Jones said: “We were delighted to receive the Club of the Year Award.  We have many volunteers who work really hard to grow the club and the game of rugby league, so it was fantastic to receive some recognition for this.

“We ensure everyone is able to play, regardless of their background or experience, so encourage anyone who is interested in playing rugby to join us.”
