Charlton land versatile Huddersfield Town defender on permanent deal

Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of versatile defender Rarmani Edmonds-Green from Huddersfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Addicks, with a club option of an extra year. Edmonds-Green, who played a key role in Rotherham United’s promotion to the Championship in 2021-22, has featured 16 times for Huddersfield this season and has been part of every matchday squad.

He becomes the Addicks’ fifth signing of a busy January transfer window following the arrivals of Tyreeq Bakinson, Lewis Fiorini, Conor Coventry and Macaulay Gillesphey.

Peckham-born Edmonds-Green has had loan spells at Rotherham, Bromley, Wigan and Swindon during his career.

He made just 14 Championship appearances for Huddersfield this season.

After sealing his switch to SE7, Edmonds-Green said: “I’m obviously a South London boy so I’m buzzing to be here and be back home. As soon as I heard about the interest, I just wanted to get down here and get going. I spoke to Michael Appleton and I like his ideas and his style of play.”

Head coach Michael Appleton commented: “Rarmani has got good experience in the Championship and League One. He’s got lots of quality on the ball, he’s very athletic and he’s quick. He gives us options across that backline, not just across the three centre-half positions but across the wing-back positions as well.

“The fans will see his physical attributes and what he’s capable of very, very quickly.”

Technical director Andy Scott added: “Rarmani’s another player who has got a promotion out of this league. He’s another player who is Championship quality and has been playing in the Championship recently. He’s got experience, he’s versatile, he gives us mobility and pace that means we can be more aggressive with our backline. He’s a really good communicator who talks well on the pitch and seems to be a really good leader.

“He’s someone who is going to give us more balance in the side and we’re delighted to have his experience and another one to add to the group.”
