Woman hospitalised after huge fire rips through block of flats

A woman was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a three-storey block of flats in the early hours of this morning.

Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Orchard Grove, Penge.

A second-floor flat was “destroyed” and half of a first-floor flat was damaged by fire. Just over half of the building’s roof was also damaged.

One woman was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. Sixteen other people managed to escape the building before firefighters arrived and three more people evacuated following advice from the London fire brigade (LFB).

The LFB’s drone team assisted by providing an aerial view of the incident.

The LFB was called at around 2am and the fire was brought under control by around 4am. Crews from Beckenham, West Norwood, Woodside, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

A spokesman from the LFB said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
