Millwall head coach answers whether he expects more transfer activity before Thursday’s deadline

Millwall head coach Joe Edwards says it is “unlikely” that the club will make any more signings before Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

The Lions have made two loan additions to their squad in the January transfer window – bringing in Tottenham centre-back Japhet Tanganga and Burnley striker Michael Obafemi.

Asked if there were set to be any more additions before the cut-off for trading, Edwards told the South London Press: “Potentially but I’d say unlikely.

“It’s probably one of those reactive ones again. Deadline day has become a thing for a reason – players elsewhere do quickly want to get out and they are interested in coming to you. If it is doable then it is doable.

“I definitely wouldn’t close the door completely now. I’d leave it until the window closes for us to be active…but I’d say it is unlikely.”

Asked if the window had gone as he expected, Edwards said: “Yeah. I never anticipated doing loads of players. We have done two loans and that takes us to the quota of five (that can be in a matchday squad) – we were never going to be able to do three, four or five loans in a window.

“In terms of buying players, I said before the window came that it isn’t easy – this window is typically for some of the bigger clubs with big money to go and address problems by throwing big money at it. We’re not going to be a club that does that.

“In terms of adding people permanently to our squad the summer is a far more feasible and sensible market to rebuild and build your squad at the start of the season, have a pre-season with people. I never envisaged it being a really busy and active window.

“Coupled with that if you look at our squad and what it has looked like in recent weeks, we have also now hit a spell where a few of the lads who have been out injured are pretty quickly starting to return to the squad. Although we have looked light on the bench in the early games in January, that will start looking different in February, just with our own players in the building.

“I’m happy with the two we’ve done and what they add.”
