Grand old gatehouse at Woolwich primed for major uplift

A blueprint has been revealed for a set of major renovations to a gatehouse in Greenwich that dates back to the early 19th century.
Greenwich council has received plans for a set of repairs and changes to the Royal Arsenal Gatehouse in Woolwich town centre.
The proposal would see the gates in the middle arch of the structure being removed to allow better access from the Royal Arsenal to Beresford Square.
New external lighting is also included in the scheme, to highlight the historical features of the building.
Replaced paving on the site is also planned, alongside general cleaning works to the facade. Repairs to the building include redecoration of historical features and upkeep of the bell tower.
Planning documents from Gort Scott Architects, on behalf of the applicant, said: “The proposals set out in this application will activate the Gatehouse.
“This will enhance activity in the area, as well as enriching the use and understanding of a significant heritage asset, thereby also contributing to cultural and tourist activity in Woolwich.”
The plans said the Grade II listed building previously served as the main entrance to the Royal Arsenal and dates back to 1828. A series of restoration works were carried out on the structure in the 1990s including roof and flooring repairs.
The current plans were sent by Greenwich Enterprise Board, a company that provides workspaces to small businesses in the borough.
The project will continue to allow the space to provide services to local businesses and is also supported by Future High Street Funding in partnership with Greenwich Council for a wider ongoing project to revamp Beresford Square.
The £21million project will see a series of improvements on Powis Street in Woolwich town centre, with Beresford Square gaining outdoor planting, a water feature and a new toilet hut.
The 400-year-old market on the site will also be relocated to a line along the west side of the square instead of its traditional spot in the centre. The market has been temporarily relocated to General Gordon Square while the works are being carried out.
