Plans for much-needed special school open for consultation

Plans for a much-needed new Special Educational Needs (SEN) school have taken a step forward as a council urged residents to have their say on proposals.  

Greenwich council has unveiled new designs following a consultation last year to repurpose what was Kidbrooke Park Primary, in Hargood Road, Blackheath, into a special school with space for 128 students who have autism. 

The council has appointed construction group Galliford Try to redevelop the site and is now encouraging residents to give feedback on the proposals before a planning application is submitted. 

Councillor Matt Morrow, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It’s our Greenwich mission to make sure every child in our borough reaches their potential, and a new specialist school would help us make sure that every young person gets the right education in the right setting.  

“Demand for special school places is huge so a new facility would allow more young people who have autism to live their best lives with the best support.  

“This site has been home to a school before, so we’re proposing to bring it back into use but in a way that would really benefit families.”  

Details of the proposals will be on show on March 6, between 4pm and 8pm at Kidbrooke Park Primary School in Holburne Road, where residents will have the chance to ask questions.
